Vani Vrtti brings to you an exclusive Kotpad Textiles collection from our very own Koraput district of Odisha from where Vani Vrtti’s foundation was laid back in 2016. We are very proud and glad to present you with the best Kotpad Tribal Textiles in the form of Saree, Stoles, Dupattas and Yardages. Kotpad textiles are famous for their natural dying process and have received Geographical Identification of India in 2005. In the mirgan street of Kotpad Village of Odisha, women dye the cotton hanks in natural madder red, extracted from the roots of aul tree (Morinda citrifolia) and natural black, extracted from iron rust fermented in jaggery.
Dyeing is the most laborious process and only performed by women. It undergoes a complete organic process where women treat and rub the hanks thoroughly under their foot using cow dung, castor oil, harida and mud as mordant before natural dying. Since it is prepared out of natural resources which are non-toxic, the dye is not harmful to the skin. Even though it is only a limited colour range, it is eco-friendly and the shades developed are very suiting and pleasant. The colours ranging from deep maroon to dark brown depending on the age of the root bark and the proportion of the dye used and are obtained with the addition of harida or iron sulphate. These colours mixed with the natural unbleached off-white color of the cotton yarn produce dramatic results. Men and women both together perform the pre-loom processes.
Mostly, men weave it on a simple pit loom through their imagination of nature and immediate surroundings such as tree, fish, birds, axes, crab, bow, temple, which reflect the culture of the area. These motifs are hand-counted and handpicked using the extra weft technique by a skilled weaver. The temple border is handpicked from both sides using three shuttle interlocking techniques also locally known as ‘phoda kumbha’. All the parameters above make Koptad textiles an exquisite Purely Natural Dyed Organic Textiles of India and the World.
